A tea towel or dish towel is a cloth that is used to dry dishes and cutlery after they have been washed. In England, during the eighteenth century, tea towels were special linen drying cloths used by a mistress of a house to dry her precious and expensive china tea set. Servants were not trusted with such a delicate job, although housemaids were charged with hand-hemming the woven linen of tea towels when their main duties were completed. Mass-produced tea towels were made during the Industrial Revolution. Today pictorial tea towels make charming and collectible souvenirs, and are occasionally used as wall decorations in European restaurants. The modern term ?tea towel` refers to towels used to dry normal dishes after dishwashing. Tea towels are used to clean dishes directly as well. In fact, they refer to cleaning of eating and cooking utensils too. The correct cleaning method, like all traditions, varies greatly not only geographically but also according to family tradition. Dishwashing requires a tea towel for the washer to wield, unless washing is done in an automated dishwasher. Commonly used implements alongside tea towels include sponges, scourers, cloths, brushes or even steel wool that may be used for intransigent stuck-on food particles. Dishwashing detergent is also generally used. However, in principle, all that is required is water. Rubber gloves may be worn when washing dishes in hot water. In some European countries, dishes are generally washed in a separate tub placed inside the sink. This was a matter of hygiene in old days, as the kitchen sink was the only sink available for all the household water. The clothes were washed in the sink while the water used to wash the floor went down the sink, and so it made sense to separate the dishwater from the sink. There were other possible reasons for this too as kitchen sinks tended to be very large in a time when heating water was considered to be a major household expense. Overall, the trend of using tea towels has re-emerged after a decrease in their usage because of modern equipment such as dishwashers.
